Yâknow, I never actually enjoyed mainstream comic books although I collected them as commodity fetish objects. Didnât care to read the stories, just looked at the glossy cover art: Silver Surfer, X-Men, Iron Man, The Avengers, I did the same with baseball cards, having no interest in the actual game, childhood cruelty forever fixed to the field, the great american pasttime, instead I coveted only the cards themselves, and had my first taste of gambling in the illicit pleasures of 'flipping' in the restroom during elementary school. Came out on top that way more often than with bat or glove in hand...But I had seen my Maâs copy of Janis Joplinâs Cheap Thrills and her Keep On Truckin' T-shirt so I was hip to Crumbâs wicked lines. Head Comix, White Man, Mr. Natural, Angelfood McSpade, Fritz The Cat, man that good stuff hit me like a ton of bricks! Existential, Irreverent, Sharp and Dazzling. Smoke up and Learn motherfucker! Rounding out the Zap gang: Robert Williams, Spain Rodriguez, Victor Moscoso, Rick Griffin, S. Clay Wilson and even Gilbert Shelton of the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers. I think these guys not only invented the entire genre but invented the jam game, I guess with a nod to The Exquisite Corpse, parlor favorite of Bretonâs gang, all the dudes would operate on the same page simultaneous and produce a chaotic masterpiece of colliding styles.

Especially notable in this regard, is Rick Griffin, who, inspired by chicano gang graffiti at the time, humorously utilized unreadable text, beautiful imaginary fonts, great unfettered letters, presented as glorious objects unto themselves, as well as arcane references to magic word squares, occult palindromes, kabbalistic jargon, etc. Itâs the visuals that really matters most: The sheer pleasure of drawing, the lust for india ink and making marks, making pictures, erecting a pantheon, creating iconography, a catalog of hallucinations, the realization of a vision, the absurd discovery of bugbears, a gateway from the aether, a model of the universe free from the constraints of physical laws.
