Later in the 19th century, they became the favoured escort of the demi-monde, an ugly cute accoutrement for streetwalkers and apaches of Paris. Shortly thereafter, les bouldogges francais became ALL THE RAGE, dontcha know: bohemians on the rive gauche, Colette, artists... Suddenly really RICH PEOPLE were dying to get their hands on them, and were tripping over themselves to buy them, import them, and breed them. Even the last Czar had one. Great taste in dogs, shame about the rest. An American who went down with the Titanic was returning home after paying thousands for one..... poor dog, he didn't make it either.
