Doctor Who

'Doctor Who' is the longest running science fiction television series in history. It's also the most popular television show in the U.K. and, since the show's 2005 revival, has a developed an enormous cult following in the U.S. The series tracks the adventures of a 900-year-old alien (called simply 'The Doctor') who travels through time and space, battling dark forces, fixing broken timelines and, well, generally saving the universe week after week.

The series began in 1963 as a way to teach British children in an entertaining way important lessons about history and science and has since grown into a worldwide television phenomenon, spawning at least three spinoffs, an American made-for-tv movie and a possible feature film rumored to be in development.

Even in the old days of cardboard sets and rubber-masked monsters, 'Doctor Who' has consistently represented sci-fi storytelling at its absolute best. It uses fantastical settings and unbelievable characters to tell celebratory stories about the most ordinary thing there is - being human. The Doctor loves humanity and through his eyes on this show we're allowed a little glimpse of all the potential he sees in us.
