Why I read about cults

Have you ever wondered if you could be sucked in? As a certified control freak, the idea of cults has always consumed me. Who's gonna get in there and change my head? I had always though cults were a mysterious and spooky phenomena with invisible magic powers at play. After starting to read about them a much more complex, less sexy picture emerged. Cults rely on mind control to survive, but it's not all that mysterious what makes people susceptible to them. After reading memoir after memoir I have discovered that cults prey upon people in vulnerable social positions (afraid, sick, poor, alone) and apply pretty simplistic tactics to get their constituents involved. That said, cult leaders are pretty theatrical for the most part. Whirling, waving, windbags with a tendency to fuck both sexes, write bad songs and make up words for things that don't exist.
